To install the Open Source vpnc client in Ubuntu linux, first open a terminal window and execute the following command:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vpnc resolvconf network-manager-vpnc
In this example, network-manager-vpnc is the gnome plug in for GUI configuration of VPNC. For KDE users, install "kvpnc" instead of network-manager- vpnc.
Once these three packages are installed, click on the Network Manager icon in the upper right corner of the screen and navigate to “Configure VPN” as shown to the right.
The dialog that next appears gives you the option to add new, or edit
existing, VPN connections. Activate the “Add” button to create a new
VPN connection for Acadia.
Click through the introduction dialog, and the VPN
client dialog, choosing VPNC if you have multiple
VPN solutions installed. At the next window, you will
be prompted to enter VPN settings.
At this point, you will need to ensure you have a copy of the Acadia
VPN client specification file. This file, available here contains nearly all the info
needed to complete installation. Click the import button and point the
file browser to the PCF file you downloaded above.
The only data you need to change on the settings after you import the
specification file is the username. Replace the text “USERNAME” (seen
right) with your acadia username. (in the format of 083521j for
students or jsmith for staff/faculty).
Clicking on the Network Manager now shows “Acadia” in the list of VPN connections. Activating this option (seen left) will start the connection attempt.
Upon clicking the Acadia link, you should be prompted with the dialog
seen to right. The “Password” field should be filled in with your
Network Password, and the Group Password field with the Acadia VPN Group
Password “pw4vpn”.
To ensure ease of connection next time, you may want to save the Group Password in keyring.
Connection should now be made to the Acadia VPN. The Network Manager icon, seen to left, should now appear with a yellow lock icon, indicating that you are now securely connect to the university VPN service.
To disconnect from VPN, simply click the disconnect option under the Network Manager icon, as seen to right.
