Cybersecurity Awareness Month: Share with Care
The final week of Cybersecurity Awareness Month considers how much we share with others, wittingly or unwittingly.
What do you post online about yourself and others? Consider what those posts reveal, who might see it, and how it might affect you or others. Now consider those same questions and apply them to your work situation. What information are you sharing, about yourself and others, on a daily basis? Consider these IBM statistics:
- The average data breach costs an organization $5 million dollars.
- Cybercrime costs annual global economy 400+ billion dollars.
The first line of access in a breach is predominantly through an email. How much Personal Identifiable Information (PII) do you have stored in your email? Do your emails that contain personal information, such as names, emails, addresses, IDs, or even credit card information? Who is this information about - students, employees, colleagues, alumni, guests, or research participants?
Secure your Collaborations
Do:
- Use Acadia Office 365 file storage, such as Teams, SharePoint, or OneDrive, for your work documents. Learn more about the different collaboration options (https://hub.acadiau.ca/TDClient/KB/ArticleDet?ID=504).
- Keep confidential or personal identifiable information on Acadia devices and stored in Acadia's Office 365 applications.
Do Not:
- Store confidential, personal or Acadia related documents on your hard-drive, a USB stick or a personal cloud storage (Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud, etc).
- Send documents containing confidential or personal identifiable information via email
Own your online presence: Every time you sign up for a new account, download a new app, or get a new device, immediately configure the privacy and security settings. Regularly check those settings to make sure that they are still valid (https://staysafeonline.org/stay-safe-online/managing-your-privacy/manage-privacy-settings/).
Get Savvy about WiFi Hotspots. Public wireless networks and hotspots are not secure, which means that anyone can potentially see what you are doing on your laptop or smartphone will you are connected to them. Limit what you do on public WiFi and avoid logging into key accounts like email or bank accounts. Consider using a VPN or a personal/mobile hotspot if you need a more secure connection.
