Security Advisory: Vishing Attempt on Campus

SERVICE(S) AFFECTED:
Telephone

TIME OF OCCURRENCE:
Friday, November 1, 2019 (3:20 pm)

AFFECTED USERS:
Faculty and Staff

MORE INFO:
There have been reports of “vishing” – voice/voicemail phishing. Vishers use the telephone to solicit financial or personal information. In this case, the voicemails are requesting personal information, specifically Social Insurance Numbers.

Please remember, legitimate organizations will not ask you to provide personal information over the phone.
As a precaution, avoid responding to voicemails:

  • That are robo-calls.
  • Are from businesses that you’re not expecting to contact you. Some will use the tactic of pretending a co-worker has given your contact information.
  • Ask you to provide your user name and passwords via a phone call. Be wary of what you provide over the phone.
