Service Notice: International Data Privacy Day

Today is Data Privacy Day.  It is an annual international effort designed to create awareness about the importance of respecting privacy, safeguarding data and enabling trust.

Cybercriminals increased efforts require increased diligence on our parts to protect our own personal information as well as the University’s data of which we are stewards.

ACTIONS:

  1. Review the new Acadia Privacy Policy: https://hr.acadiau.ca/files/sites/hr/Policies%20and%20Procedures/Privacy_Policy.pdf

  2. Take the 2021 Annual Information Security Training. Training is provided through KnowBe4 (https://training.knowbe4.com/ui/login).  It consists of 3 modules, totaling less than an hour.  You do not have to take the training all at once. You will receive reminders until all training is complete.

  3. Own Your Privacy.  There are steps you can take to learn about the types of data you’re generating online, and how it’s collected, shared and used.
    1. Protect Your Email. Remember over 90% of breaches start with a phishing email. It is the direct conduit of access to the University and to your information.
      1. Use separate email addresses for your work and personal communications.
      2. Keep Personal Information out on an email, including in the body/text of an email or as an attachment.
    2. Keep tabs on your apps. Many apps ask for access to personal information, such as your geographic location, contacts list and photo album, before you can use their services. Be thoughtful about who gets that information, and wary of apps that require access to information that is not required or relevant for the services they are offering. Delete unused apps on your internet-connect devices and keep others secure by performing updates.
    3. Manage your privacy settings. Check the privacy and security settings on web services and apps and set them to your comfort level for information sharing. Each device, application or browser you use will have different features to limit how and with whom you share information.
