Service Notice: Microsoft Teams and 3rd Party Applications

SERVICE(S) AFFECTED:
Microsoft Teams 3rd Party Applications

AFFECTED USERS:
Microsoft Teams Users

MORE INFO:
Starting September 3, 2020, Technology Services is restricting the installation of new 3rd party applications from within Teams.

Third-party apps in Microsoft are add-ins to be used with the Microsoft suite of products. Examples of common 3rd party apps are the poll tool, Polly, or the quiz game, Kahoot.

As with the Apple or Google Play stores, there are security and privacy concerns associated with unknown applications. New applications are made available every day by unknown sources.  Some seem too good to be true and they usually are. Applications are similar to other pieces of software and hardware and require a vetting process to ensure that they do not pose a risk to our Acadia network.

How does this impact you?

  1. Any existing access to a 3rd party application will be maintained.  You will not lose access to it.
  2. Microsoft applications such as Whiteboard, Forms, OneNote will not be restricted.
  3. Additional 3rd party applications will undergo a Privacy and Security Assessment upon request. To request a 3rd party application, please complete the following HUB Request: https://hub.acadiau.ca/TDClient/Requests/ServiceDet?ID=195. Please expect a 2 week turnaround time to conduct the assessment.
